Memories about Peter

Created by Annamonika 3 years ago

I met Peter 62 years ago at an international work camp organized by Quakers in London.
Peter arrived a week later than all of us. After this camp, he invited me and my friend from Poland, Halina Tubylewicz, to his family home in Barnstaple. We came there after a several-week hitchhiking raid around England, Scotland and Wales. We met there in Barnstaple with the extraordinary hospitality of his parents and grandmother. Were organized great trips around the area. Peter was a guide and organizer. The trip to Clovelly stuck in my memory in particular. Peter came to Poland several times. He was not afraid of the gloomy roughness of Poland in those times. He admired forests, birds and animals. My brother Janusz and Eileen Buckle from London joined us on our  wandering around Poland. We mainly visited Bieszczady and Masuria. Everything by hitchhiking or on foot.
Peter was a very cheerful man, kind to everyone, always smiling, welcoming, helpful and very modest. He was still a medical student then. Later, we saw each other less often, and rather we at his place. After their marriage to Elaine, they hosted me with my husband Ryszard and my father in Cardiff, and earlier (in 1962) they hosted my brother Janusz. (Peter showed him Lundy Island, among other things), and in the 1980s they hosted  our three sons.
When martial law was introduced in Poland in 1981. Peter and Elaine sent us provisions spontaneously to support us.
We are very proud that Peter was knighted. Of course, he did not boast of this honor due to his modesty.
The last time Peter visited us in Poland in our new home in the late 1980s. He was already a well-known and respected professor. He came to Poland to give lectures. It was our last meeting. But we wrote to each other every year before Christmas.
He was an extremely warm, cultured, good and wise man and our real friend.
It is so extremely difficult for us to come to terms with his departure.
We will all remember him for the rest of our days.
