In Loving Memory of Peter S. Harper

As I mourn the passing of a great man, Professor Sir Peter Harper, I find myself at a loss asking where do I begin? From his major scientific achievements that put our country on the map. To his foresight and hard work in building an institute housing the multidisciplinary genetic community all under one roof. I think it should now be named the Harper Institute of Genomic Medicine. It was a unique idea nationally and internationally in 1987 when I started working there and he was my supervisor. He nurtured and led scores of doctors and scientists who became leaders around the world. To his humanity, humility, care and support for all of us who were lucky enough to be inspired by him. He was the Father of Genetics in Wales and the reason why Wales continues to lead the way in Genomics as he built the corner stones for his students and colleagues to build on. I just can’t believe that i am referring to him in the past tense, it breaks my heart. His influence on my career was immense and he was forever helpful until the end, anytime I asked him for help.
